The full-brogue Oxford was originally developed by the Scottish and the Irish and was considered a men’s shoe through much of the 20th century. Later, the beloved perforation pattern conquered women’s fashion as well. This traditional perforation on the shaft was at one point purely practical; the holes were intended to allow water to drain from the shoes of the rural population of the Scottish and Irish moors more easily. Today, this broguing is purely decorative.
